Marcelli Goes Racing For a Cure
Barrie, Ontario (May 2nd 2009) – Intersport Racing driver Kyle Marcelli recently took part in the 2nd annual Toronto Tirecraft Grand Prix for Lupus Research. The event this year was held at the newly developed Mosport International Karting facility in Bomanville, Ontario.
Coming off last years victory in the inaugural event Marcelli was excited to get back behind the wheel of a go-kart for this great cause.
“When I heard the news from organizer Bill Bryan that he was putting together a 2nd annual Lupus Grand Prix to raise money and awareness, I was more than excited to be involved again, and go racing for a cure. I have some good friends who are affected by this disease and any time I have the opportunity to be even a small part to the success of the Lupus Flare Foundation to finding a cure than you can count me in.” Said Kyle Marcelli
The cool over cased Saturday was filled with a 40 min open practice for all the participants in the morning to familiarize themselves with their go-kart and the race track. Following practice was the 120 min endurance race. As the grid was determined by luck of the draw, Kyle and his teamates were to start 5th. Breaking the race up into three stints the first being 30 min and the next two being 25 min, the team decided that Kyle start the race. Taking the lead very early, the Barrie resident opened up what was said to be a 28 second lead before running into mechanical issues with the engine sputtering. The Mosport crew did their best to get the team back out but by this time were down several laps. The next two drivers on Marcelli’s team took to the track doing a great job with their 25 minute stint each to take the checkered for the 2nd annual Lupus GP.
"Kyle has made a very real commitment to help the Lupus Flare Foundation, not only to help raise much needed funds for research but to raise awareness of this life altering and sometimes fatal disease. Kyle was on the winning team last year and in typical Marcelli style this year he took an impressive early lead for his team but did not get on the podium due to mechanical problems, however Kyle being Kyle drove the fastest lap of the entire event". Says Pat Bayman of the Lupus Flare Foundation
"I am impressed but not surprised at the way the motor racing community has come together for this great cause. The Toronto Tirecraft Grand Prix for Lupus Research is a great event with great participants for a great cause. I am overjoyed at the amount that the Lupus Flare Foundation will be able to hand over to the Lupus Clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto". Stated Pat Bayman of the Lupus Flare Foundation.
Marcelli will be back on track next week as part of his Intersport Racing duties driving rounds 3 and 4 held at Miller Motorsports Park located in Salt Lake City, Utah.
